TitleBeyond Generation X: A Practical Guide for Managers
ShortDescriptionBeyond Generation X: A Practical Guide for Managers is a guide to understanding, successfully managing, and motivating Generation X'ers.
LongDescriptionMany factors shape our basic values and belief systems. The values and belief systems of each employee are packed in a brief case, backpack or other tote bag and brought into the workplace. Beyond Generation X: A Practical Guide for Managers was developed to help managers understand what has shaped their employees' values and beliefs. It is through this understanding that problems can be understood, conflicts anticipated, and needs met. Consider the impact of these factors: family beliefs and value systems, experiences during our formative and growing up years, general economic situation, how we perceive the world (fearful and threatening or wonderful and promising), availability of technology, how we satisfy our needs, and our motivating factors. Generational differences in expectations, values, and ideas of what a job is all about baffle many managers. They may also lead to conflict in the workplace as the generational differences bump up against each other, especially when the employees and their jobs are interdependent. Mix a pre-World War II manager, a baby boomer, and a Generation X employee together, and you may find challenges, as well as the potential for growth. The economical survival of any business requires that employees' needs, attitudes, and differences be taken into consideration. The easiest route may be to temporarily sweep the problems under the rug; however, those problems will not remain hidden.
