LongDescriptionThis article examines the relationship of knowledge management (KM) to human resources (HR) along several dimensions that are useful for HR leaders to consider as their organizations move to streamline and develop flatter management structures. It suggests that the link between KM and HR is related to KM's use of managing intellectual capital and intangible assets, while HR management focuses on managing the sources of these assets. In the absence of a culture that supports information sharing, various tools and techniques available to convert tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge may prove ineffective. HR can play a key role in making KM successful by changing cultures that hoard information into cultures that share information. This may need to be tied to the organization's reward system to promote information sharing. KM has a significant role in supporting organizational learning by capturing and transforming tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge.
