Title | Building Professional Capacity in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) |
ShortDescription | This report supplies documentation and analysis of training and education needs in support of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) deployment. The report addresses the three critical questions of who are the essential personnel working on ITS, what do these professionals (existing and new hires) need to know, and how are the knowledge and skills best learned? |
LongDescription | This report summarizes a comprehensive effort conducted in the summer of 1998 to more systematically investigate the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) training and education needs of transportation professionals. A team of analysts conducted a series of nearly 200 interviews in an effort to obtain a more detailed understanding of the underlying fundamental knowledge and skills required in support of ITS applications and services. The interviewees spanned a range of ITS involvement from those actively engaged for several years, to those just beginning the process. Thus, the reported needs reflect an important grass-roots perspective obtained from the public-sector, private-sector, and the academic community. The report documents the wide-ranging ITS training and education needs of transportation professionals. Although the focus of this work is ITS, the analysis also revealed that the fundamental knowledge and skills are applicable to a wider audience of transportation professionals engaged in the operation and management of multimodal surface transportation systems. |
