Title | To Make Changes, Manage Them |
ShortDescription | The focus of this article is on the importance of, and approaches used, in engaging employees in organization change efforts. |
LongDescription | Not only have change initiatives been on the rise, but the importance of managing individuals through change has been gaining credence as well. It can be costly to fail to manage employees through the process, as dissatisfied employees are generally less productive than they could be. Resistance to change by employees can be addressed by engaging them throughout the change process through a structured and integrated approach that includes: (1) a communication plan and roadmap for the change leaders, (2) training to support the change effort, and (3) a plan for addressing resistance. The change management plan should be initiated during the problem identification phase rather than waiting until all change decisions are made. It is recommended that managers receive 'just-in-time' training to prepare them to help their employees to address what is changing, why change is taking place, what impact it will have on their area, how it affects individual people, and how to deal with resistance. |
