LongDescription | Strategic workforce planning is a systematic process for identifying the human capital required to meet organizational goals and developing the strategies necessary to meet these requirements. Responding to a need for strategic workforce planning, the Center for Human Resource Management (CHRM) undertook many initiatives in 1999. In 2000, CHRM consortium members requested that the National Academy of Public Administration build on the case studies and models defined with practical applications, including a step-by-step approach for managers, human resource professionals, and members of workforce-planning teams for use in developing and implementing workforce-planning programs. This 'how-to' guide defines strategic workforce planning and provides models, checklists and a step-by-step approach to strategic workforce planning in the public sector. The approach taken is based on case studies of the Natural Resources Conservation Center and the Volpe Transportation Center. It explains how to project workforce supply, determine future requirements, project workforce demand, and analyze gaps. |
