TitleMinnesota Department of Transportation Office of Civil Rights
ShortDescriptionThe Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) Office of Civil Rights provides training opportunities designed to increase participation of females and minorities in the highway heavy construction trades and to increase their training to support them in moving to journey level worker status. Programs include training opportunities, mentor/protégé relationships, on-the-job training (OJT), and a National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) program designed to motivate secondary students toward professions in the field of transportation.
LongDescriptionThe MnDOT Web site contains PDFs explaining the agency’s efforts to attract, train, promote, and retain DBE firms; provide OJT for females and minorities; and attract junior high school and high school students to transportation careers. The mentor protégé program is designed to further the development of DBEs, including but not limited to assisting them in moving to non-tranditional areas of work or competing in the marketplace outside the DBE Program via the provision of training and assistance from other firms. This program focuses on increasing the volume of work that DBEs are capable of winning. The agency administers the FHWA OJT through the Road Opportunities and Diversity Success (R.O.A.D.S) Program. The purpose of this program is to provide a qualified and diverse highway construction workforce that includes an increase in the number of under-represented populations in the highway heavy construction industry. Through the NISTI Program, participants spend four weeks on various college campuses throughout the state engaged in field trips, hands-on projects, and presentations by professionals in the transportation industry. Enhancement activities expose students to methods and activities designed to improve study habits and increase academic achievement.
